ShareTweetForward Stand Up To Racism has been mobilising across Britain opposing the far right and challenging the government’s racist hostile environment – and here’s more to come…As Suella Braverman and the Sunak government’s racist and vicious ‘Illegal Migration Bill’ was discussed again at parliament last week, anti racists and anti fascists were out again in force in communities the length and breadth of Britain. Across Scotland, Wales and England, Stand Up To Racism was opposing the far right, fascists and racists who are continuing to attempt to seize the opportunity opened up by the government’s racist offensive to sow hate and division. The weekend was also the two year anniversary of the incredible “Battle of Kenmure Street“, where thousands surrounded a Home Office detention van in Pollokshields, Glasgow, and forced the release of two neighbours who had been taken from their home in a dawn raid and held for seven hours in the back of the van. Despite an enormous and widely condemned police presence in the area, and while many were trying to celebrate Eid, the crowds refused to go until they were released. Read more here This is a timely reminder that with mass anti racist protest, by building that kind of anti racist opposition everywhere, we can stop the government’s racist scapegoating and attacks and we can drown out the voices of the fascist and far right who are whipping up hate. After Kenmure Street, we saw similar resistance stopping raids in Edinburgh, Hackney and Peckham in London, in Chorlton and elsewhere. We saw mass protest and action stop the first scheduled flight to deport people to Rwanda. We say welldone to all anti racists and anti fascists out on the streets this week refusing to leave the space to racists who want to divide us – let’s build an even bigger anti racist movement! In Dorset, Stand Up To Racism were opposing the highly contested plan to cram people onto a boat off Portland. In a BBC report (Here) the local group’s joint chair, Lynne Hubbard, captured that it is about solidarity and humanity, not fear based on whipped up racism, when she said refugees had “suffered enough“.She said: “We would see it as a prison barge designed for 222 people [and] 500 humans are going to be put on that barge. It’s inhumane.“The government should do what it did around Ukrainians. We know there are many, many people who would be happy to host a refugee.” Stand Up To Racism were also out on Saturday in Aberystwyth, where Dyfed Powys police were taken to task in Aberystwyth. Camilla Mngaza mother of Siyanda led the criticism of a force that has refused to investigate hate crime and had stopped and searched a local black business man constantly over the last few years. Both the outgoing and incoming mayors spoke and urged local people to push the council into action against racism.Speakers from the GRT community spoke on how their community has been targeted by the state for centuries and they urged anti racists to fight against the oppression of travellers. The incoming student union president outlined how he was going to make Aberystwyth Uni an anti racist college. Other speakers sent solidarity to striking workers and UNISON Wales Black Workers talked about UNISON’s year of the Black Worker and the need for unions to fight against the Tory government’s hostile environment and to oppose their anti refugee policies.
