This weekend a group of teachers, both NUT and UCU members, visited the camp in Calais. We donated £2,000 raised by South London Stand up to Racism to Care4Calais and then went to the school where a UCU member and ESOL teacher has now been working for three weeks and hopes to stay for longer.
The adult school room was full with not a space available. Teresa is teaching 3 classes per day from 10 until 6 over six days per week. The students are really benefitting from the continuity of having the same teacher over a longer period of time.
We were accompanied over the weekend by UCU members there to see how education runs in the camp.
One school teacher brought other teachers including a music teacher and the electronic keyboards were brought out into sunshine and people gathered round to sing and enjoy the music.
