The weekend saw another inspiring wave of #BlackLivesMatter demonstrations with thousands in central London, and thousands in many localities on socially distanced protests too. This included a demonstration in Glasgow, where Stand Up To Racism organised a 1500 strong socially distanced demonstration that peacefully and defiantly ‘took back’ the city’s George Square after racist thugs ran amok and violently attacked a refugee rights demonstration under the completely fabricated pretext of defending the cenotaph – which like elsewhere had never been a target of anti racist protest. The day was a proud success for anti racists everywhere (see full report and pictures here)
With both the government and the far right targeting the #BlackLivesMatter movement, this week’s #TakeTheKnee action on Wednesday at 6pm is a crucial opportunity for a widespread display of solidarity with #BlackLivesMatter and to draw in many more anti racists in every area to active resistance to racism. The examples by firefighters, health workers and rail workers who have already joined #TakeTheKnee actions shows the possibility Wednesday’s action can offer to also take the anti racist movement into every workplace and trade union – a crucial way to build strong anti racist threads that can challenge racism wherever it appears.
