Stand Up to Racism statement on May election results

The 7 May local elections mark a dangerous turning point.

Reform UK has made significant advances—feeding off anger at the cost of living crisis, broken public services and widespread disillusionment with mainstream politics. But Reform offers no answers. Its entire project is built on division, scapegoating and racism.

In the final days of this campaign, we saw exactly what that means in practice: candidates exposed for racist and Islamophobic views, and policies designed to punish and divide communities. This is not “anti-establishment” politics—it is the politics of the far right.

Reform’s rise is dragging politics to the right—and giving confidence to forces beyond the ballot box, including the fascists around Tommy Robinson.

That makes the coming weeks decisive.

Robinson and his supporters are already moving to capitalise on this moment, with a mobilisation in London on Saturday 16 May. They aim to turn electoral gains into a racist street movement rooted in Islamophobia, antisemitism, anti-migrant hatred and division.

We cannot allow that to happen.

In the run-up to these elections, Stand Up to Racism supporters mobilised across England, Scotland and Wales. Our campaign included:

  • Distributing 800,000 Stop Reform leaflets door to door and in local areas
  • Giving out hundreds of thousands of Don’t Vote Reform infosheet newspapers
  • Activities in wards covering hundreds of areas
  • Organised stalls, canvasses and meetings, and took the argument against racism into local communities.

That work matters. But this moment demands more.

We now need to escalate—rapidly and decisively.

Our task is to:

  • Build a visible, confident anti-racist movement that challenges all forms of racism, including Islamophobia and antisemitism, in every town and city
  • Take on Reform’s racism wherever it appears—at the ballot box and beyond
  • Unite trade unions, campaigners and communities in a common fight
  • Mobilise in our thousands on Saturday 16 May to stop Tommy Robinson

The far right is trying to grow—electorally and on the streets.
We must be bigger, louder and more organised.
No to Reform.
No to Tommy Robinson.
No to racism.
Join us on 16 May.
