Over 1,900 people have died in police custody or following contact with the police in Britain since 1990. The vast majority of these deaths are disregarded, with no accountability for the police involved. In the same period only one police officer has been convicted for manslaughter. There have been zero convictions for murder.
We stand in solidarity with the dozens of families of those who have been killed now taking mass legal action, starting with the People’s Tribunal on Police Killings.
These cases are not individual accidents, they’re the systematic failings of the police force. Deaths in police custody are also disproportionately of black people. From Stephen Lawrence to Chris Kaba, we condemn the institutionally racist police force that is responsible for this injustice.
Every death in police custody is one too many. We must shout loudly about every victim and continue to campaign for them and their families. The police and departments involved must face accountability, charges and prosecutions. The police must not continue to have a license to kill.
The government must support this seminal class action, and we call on politicians and lawmakers to act to bring justice now.
