🔥 Resisting the rise of racism and fascism
Stand Up To Racism national organising conference
Saturday 21 October, 11am – 4pm, taking place at NEU HQ, Hamilton House, Mabledon Place, London & online as a hybrid event…
Rishi Sunak and Suella Braverman are putting racism and the scapegoating of refugees at the centre of government policy to distract from and scapegoat for the cost of living crisis that it has created. Sunak’s “stop the boats” and Braverman’s “invasion” rhetoric has led to a resurgence of fascist mobilisations targeting refugees. The government’s so-called “anti-woke” agenda is also being used by the far right to mobilise.
The so-called “Illegal Migration Bill” effectively ends the right to asylum. For those crossing the Channel there are no alternative safe routes to enter Britain. The ‘Rwanda plan’ means refugees could potentially face deportation when they get here. The Nationality and Borders Act and the Windrush scandal show how the hostile environment toward refugees leads to racism towards established migrant, African, Asian, Caribbean, Gypsy, Roma, Traveller and other communities.
Meanwhile despite the huge international Black Lives Matter movement, the strip searching of Child Q & others, and the disproportionate impact of Covid on BAME communities, no government action is being taken to tackle institutional racism in the police and justice system, health, education and housing. Since Covid there has also been a rise of racism towards East and Southeast Asian communities.
However the scale of support for refugees and Gary Lineker’s opposition to the government’s anti-refugee rhetoric shows anti-racists are the majority.
Join our conference to discuss how we mobilise this majority and push back against racism from the government and a resurgent far right.
