Resisting the right – on the street and at the ballot box. SUTR News to April 19

We are just weeks away from elections on 7 May that could see far right Reform UK make a big breakthrough and in the run up to the next ‘Unite the Kingdoms’ demo called on Saturday 16 May.

That demo be faced by a united mobilisation by the Palestine movement, marking the Nakba, and Stand Uo To Racism.

The scale of local mobilisations against the far right & unity demos (see below about Manchester, Glasgow, Aberdeen) show that our movement is growing.

The level of activity against Reform UK shows that people are just as determined to stop the far right at the ballot box as they are on the streets.

Over the next week we want to maximise the activity against Reform UK, build for 16 May and combat the threat of the far right in every locality. Events in Epsom show that they are still out agitating for violence on the streets while Reform UK battle for control at the top.

Unity marches

Cracking Unity march in Paisley today with over 300 people! Everybody was incredibly friendly and the march was vibrant and bigger than we expected!

Everybody spoke about the need to fight reform and racism, clearly there is an appetite here for something serious.

The Zips – who played at the Ferguslie Park Rock Against Racism gig in 1978 – played at today’s rally! (as well as a number of young local bands/acts)

Aberdeen unity march today 🩶🩶🩶
Around 300. Very important after months of violent fascist protests and intimidation here. The thugs tried to attack the march full of families and refugees today but failed. Antiracists have reclaimed the streets and now need to keep up the campaign against the fascism, Reform UK and racism

Today 2,000 people joined the Southside Unity March Against Racism in Glasgow 👏👏👏

A big thank you to everyone who joined us today – and to Love Music Hate Racism providing us with a wonderful gig at the end!

We say #RefugeesAreWelcomeHere
No to the Far right, No to Islamophobia

Today’s demonstration shows that the legacy of Kenmure Street lives on. From Kenmure Street to Minneapolis, the anti-racist movement will continue to mobilise against the bigots and racists.

Stopping Reform on May 7

London

Enfield SUtR off to leaflet Town ward.

Sunny and efficient day out leafleting against Reform in Clerkenwell in Islington today! Thanks so much for covering so much ground across some really big estates, mainly council but a few new builds, around the south of the borough where we know Reform are standing serious candidates. But despite that, everyone we came into into direct contact with was really supportive, and we even got someone at the start to join the SUTR WA group. There was one person in one of the more fancy-seeming new builds near the Royal Mail sorting centre who did crumple up and throw one of the flyers Mario and I had put under their door back into the hallway, but out of the many many hundreds distributed I’d say that’s not so bad. ✊

Downham Ward, Lewisham Dream Team. Day of action
Stall and delivered 400 tabloids door to door and shifted few hundred pink Anti Reform leaflets…

Leafletting the shops in New Addington, South Croydon today, a real target for Reform where there have been lots of flags. There were Tory and Reform gazebos present, countered by our stall, and an NEU one campaigning to Save Education.

There were a few negative and hostile remarks. But there were far more positive ones, with several local people joining our WhatsApp group and ready to help leaflet the huge estate behind the shops and build a public meeting. A group of brilliant teenagers took some of our leaflets at the end and started leafletting the cafes!
A woman whose daughter lives locally helped us leaflet and said she felt really encouraged by people’s response to us – that is what it is all about!
We Are the Majority and We Will Stand Up to Racism, Reform and the Far Right! 💪✊️❤️✊️💪

Six Southwark SUTR activists distributed many hundred of StopReform fliers at East Street market in Walworth South London on Saturday. An overwhealmingly positive response from shoppers. More than a dozen people signed up to help with future leafleting in the local area.

Thank you! to the 16 people who turned out to leaflet Erdington today.

We got a good third of the ward completed. And with only 2 weekends to go, we’re going to have to do some evening leafleting as well if we’re going to complete the ward and move on to another.

But good job today everyone 👏✊

Great day leafleting against Reform in Barnsley Central. 13 of us gave out 2,000 leaflets. We will be out again next Sunday at 11am.

Nottingham Stand Up To Racism were invited as special guests of Millie Manders and The Shut Up at Rescue Rooms, Nottingham, on Friday 17 April, for what turned out to be an incredible night of music and solidarity. The show was absolutely outstanding, with an electric atmosphere and a packed venue – the largest crowd of the band’s tour so far this year.
Also hundreds of flyers given out for our Unity Rally when a few ‘Patriots’ are threatening to turn up in Nottingham next Sunday 26th April and for May 16th

Likewise, in Liverpool last weekend. and nice support from Death Trails, Blackpool based band.

Hundreds of Stop Reform broadsheets distributed to Green Party members at their NE launch meeting in Newcastle yesterday. There will be a stall at Tynemouth market in North Tyneside this morning and distribution of broadsheets at a Unison young members meeting at N.Region TUC offices in Newcastle this afternoon. SUTR supporters will attend an election hustings for women at the Northern Stage theatre in Newcastle on Tuesday to challenge participants on the question of refugees and immigration and to distribute broadsheets.

Midlands and East Anglia

In Hull today, positive response from passers by to the leaflets and our signs and banners, with people thanking us for being there, disgusted by the Far right’s racist attempts to exploit this issue. Numbers were fairly even – a few of the Far right tried to goad us at the end but we just stood silently with our signs and after a couple of insults from them , they scuttled off.

Diss Norfolk

South

We had a great leafleting session today in sunny Peacehaven with four groups going out and a central stall. Lots of interesting conversations! Please join us for the next session!

Over 20 of us on a mass leafleting session in Portsmouth City Centre, in response to the local far right group saying they would be out campaigning against all parties that voted for the Council of Sanctuary pledge

About 10 ‘Portsmouth Patriots’ mostly kept their vile politics and banners hidden, while we played music and proudly spread SUTR’s message to stop Reform UK

Every home in 2 of our 14 wards has already had a leaflet and our brilliant team of volunteers has started on the next 2

Danny Kruger , Reform MP was in Hassocks on the radio 4 Any Questions panel. Mid Sussex SUTR leafletted outside and many members were in the audience. Kruger given a hard time.

Street stall in Winton, Bournemouth today, campaigning against Reform, also door to door leafleting in Boscombe.
What was response like
Quite a few positive ..some shouts from cars minute we put banner and posters up! No abuse going door to door leafletting

Forest of Dean SUTR had a successful Don’t vote Reform stall in Monmouth yesterday and running a stall this morning in Chepstow.

Countering the right

Britain First had a miserable day in Manchester yesterday. Possibly 400, which dwindled to around 200 by the time Paul Golding addressed their rally, with many of their supporters wandering away looking pissed off. We had around 800, and made a good attempt to stop them marching past Piccadilly Gardens but the police basically had the city under siege and employed horses, dogs and pepper spray. We then marched to their rally point where we were close enough to drown them out and make it clear that there were more of us than them. No room for complacency but a definite win for our side.

Oxford: racists and fascists outnumber 10-1

50 anti-racists out against Oxfordshire Patriots’ racist ‘stop the boats’ rally. They mobilised a paltry half dozen supporters and were quickly thrown into disarray. The Patriots packed up slunk away after three hours.

Only 20 of us at the Roundhouse in Bournemouth tonight. 25 of them in 2 separate groups.

Monitoring Group Report

There’s a clear sense of building across the country.

Glasgow’s Southside march bringing out around 2,000 people is the standout, but it’s the spread that matters just as much. Paisley and Aberdeen both saw around 300 turn out, with reports of lively, friendly crowds and a real mix of people — families, refugees, long-time activists, younger layers. In Aberdeen especially, that feels significant after months of tension and intimidation. The fact that a march like that can happen, hold its ground, and push back an attempted disruption says something about the balance shifting.

There’s also a cultural thread running through these events. Live music gives them a different feel — less like a routine protest. That matters in terms of drawing people in and keeping them involved.

In Manchester, anti-racists outnumbered Britain First and were able to disrupt and drown out their rally, even with heavy policing limiting how far things could go. In Oxford, the imbalance was even sharper, with the far right only managing a handful. Elsewhere — Hull, Bournemouth — the pattern repeats: small groups trying to provoke, but without the numbers to dominate.

None of that means the far right has disappeared. They’re still active, still attempting to organise, and in some places still relying on intimidation. But they’re not having things their own way, and being forced onto the back foot.

The push towards May 7 is growing. Across London, but also in towns and cities around the country, there’s a sustained campaign effort aimed directly at stopping Reform electorally.

It’s happening ward by ward: Enfield, Haringey, Lewisham, Croydon, Southwark, Tower Hamlets. Teams of activists out for hours at a time, distributing hundreds and sometimes thousands of leaflets, covering estates, talking to people on doorsteps and in markets, coming back to finish areas off. The reports are consistent — mostly positive responses, occasional hostility, and a steady trickle of people wanting to get involved, joining WhatsApp groups, offering to help leaflet next time.

Outside London, the same pattern shows up. Barnsley, Chesterfield, Portsmouth, Swansea, Newport report Stalls in town centres, leaflets through doors, presence at meetings and events.

Overall, it feels like momentum — more people involved, more places active, and more confidence than before.
