Up to 50 people attended a Holocaust Memorial Meeting in Cambridge on Monday, organised jointly by Cambridge Unite Against Fascism (UAF) and Cambridge National Education Union (NEU section).
They watched a video of Holocaust survivors Leon Greenman and Esther Brunstein describing some of the horrors they witnessed in the concentration camps. Local teacher Richard Rose then described what he’d seen when he visited Auschwitz and the Krakow Ghetto on a UAF educational trip. He also explained how the Nazis were able to grow and seize power, and described some of the heroic acts of resistance against them. The meeting then held a lively discussion, both about the history of Fascism and about what can be done now to ensure similar events never happen again. People talked about the importance of opposing Islamophobia and all other instances of racism, and of supporting refugees. Some school students present decided to organise a Love Music Hate Racism gig at their school. The meeting ended with a call for people to attend the Stand Up to Racism national demo on March 17th for United Nations Anti Racism Day.
