It is with deep sorrow and profound respect that we honour the life and legacy of Maz Saleem, a tireless campaigner, fearless activist, and devoted friend. Maz was a powerhouse of social change who dedicated her life to fighting racism, Islamophobia, and injustice—but she was also a woman of immense warmth, joy, and vitality who lit up any room she walked into.
Maz’s journey as a prominent human rights advocate was forged in the wake of unspeakable personal tragedy. Following the brutal murder of her beloved father, Mohammed Saleem, in 2013, Maz channeled her grief into an unyielding pursuit of truth. Through the Justice for Mohammed Saleem campaign, she fought tenaciously to ensure his murder was officially recognised for what it was: a racist, Islamophobic terrorist attack. Her courage fundamentally challenged how Islamophobic violence is perceived and handled in the UK.
Maz did not stop at seeking justice for her own family; she became a shield and a voice for marginalised communities everywhere.
As an invaluable advocate for Stand Up to Racism and Stop the War, she was a powerful, commanding presence on the stage. She spoke passionately at the massive Stop Trump demonstrations, mobilised crowds at numerous Palestinian solidarity rallies, and addressed workers at many trade union conferences, inspiring thousands with her eloquence and determination.
Her solidarity knew no borders. Maz was an unwavering champion for the Palestinian struggle for freedom and dignity. Her deep empathy also led her directly to the frontlines of the global refugee crisis, organising solidarity trips to Calais, visiting Syria, and bearing witness to the suffering of displaced people in the “Jungle.” Closer to home, she served as a vital voice for Muslim women facing violence and discrimination.
Yet, for all the heavy battles she fought, Maz never lost her zest for life. She was a fantastic dancer with an infectious energy, fuelled by her deep love of music—especially George Michael and house music. She brought a beautiful balance of fierce determination and radiant joy to everyone around her. Maz confronted hatred not with despair, but with relentless action and a vibrant spirit that could not be dimmed.
While her passing leaves a profound void, her legacy lives on in the movements she shaped and the hearts of all who danced, marched, and stood alongside her. Rest in power, Maz.
