PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Solidarity protest goes ahead 6pm Wed 7 September outside the French Embassy – save The Calais ‘jungle’ refugee camp

Emergency demonstration in defect of Calais refugees goes ahead, Wednesday 7 September 6pm, French Embassy London.

The blockade of the Calais jungle refugee camp has been lifted but only after protest leaders received assurances from state regional representatives that the camp will be dismantled ‘in a single step’.

That means that the refugees face a government backed onslaught, including hundreds of children, many of them unaccompanied.

Weyman Bennet from Stand up to Racism said: ‘Previous attacks by police on these camps have seen unaccompanied children disappear, you can only imagine their fate’.

The French and British governments are failing in their duty of care towards up to ten thousand refugees, many sleeping in appalling conditions at the camp.

Aid workers have stated recently that the camp is even short of food.

Yet the French authorities seek to win votes be being ‘tough’ on the refugees while the British government has even failed to act on the Dubs amendment to the Immigration Bill that should have led to unaccompanied children coming to this country.

Sabby Dahli from Stand up to Racism said: ‘Stand up to Racism will protest against the planned assault on the Jungle to offer our solidarity to those at the camp this Wednesday 7 September at the French Embassy in Knightsbridge, the blockade may be over but the threat to to the refugees continues’.

‘But we are also calling on Theresa May to stop the rhetoric and scapegoating and to act on the Dubs amendment as a first move in developing a responsible policy to refugees’.
