Saturday 23rd May is the one-year anniversary – of the historic defeat of fascist ‘Tommy Robinson’ – in his bid to become a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the North West Region of England.
The defeat of ‘Robinson ‘ – real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon – was not inevitable. He only needed around 8 per cent of the vote to win a seat – because of the form of proportional representation used at the time at the European Elections.
If ‘Robinson’ had won a seat, it would have meant the breakthrough of real fascists into the British political mainstream, and would have seen the growth of a thousands-strong fascist street fighting movement in this country.
This is what we saw when Nick Griffin won a North West MEP seat in 2009, with the growth of the EDL, led by ‘Robinson’ himself.
Stand Up to Racism and Unite Against Fascism launched our campaign to stop him, on the night that he announced he was standing (25th April 2019), supported by trades unions, the labour movement and others, and campaigned against him across the North West region.
The significance of ‘Robinson’s’ defeat should not be downplayed or forgotten. It was hugely significant.
