Anti-racist highlight of the week:
Oxford SUTR and Education
A SUTR activist reported that they had conversations with an NEU rep about the possibility of Oxford SUTR having a stall at a secondary school anti-cuts meeting. This conversation led to the school head and deputy head making contact and setting up a meeting to discuss Oxford SUTR visiting the school.
This week activists met with the deputy head who invited Oxford SUTR to run a series of 5 assemblies for the whole school (on the same day). Issues they have been asked to cover: unchecked racism, racism online, who is Tommy Robinson and the far right, why refugees are not to blame and celebrating diversity.
The assemblies will take place (270 students in each year group) in January. The school is also going to arrange a separate visit for Oxford SUTR to do a 6th Form assembly.
Oxford SUTR are combining this with Love Music Hate Racism and aiming to take a small team of people in along with a local rap artist.

Waltham Forest
Waltham Forest SUTR had 2 fundraising events as part of Black history month this week. “The Freedom Walks in Walthamstow and Chingford hosted by Waltham Forest Stand Up To Racism (WF SUTR) and guided by the brilliant Peter Ashan were powerful journeys through local history. We uncovered Waltham Forest’s links to the transatlantic slave trade and celebrated centuries of Global Majority presence and resilience. Together, we raised nearly £300 to support WF SUTR’s anti-racist organising. These funds will help us print flyers, rent meeting spaces, and keep building a movement for justice.”
Hailsham/Crowborough
Some 25-30 people gathered at a protest aimed at the local council against asylum seekers being housed at the Crowborough army camp. 15 antiracists gathered to leaflet local people and take up the argument that refugees are not to blame – either for government plans to house them at Crowborough or for wider problems in society.

Report back from Sheffield demonstration on Saturday 8th. “Sheffield Stands Up! We showed UKIP they are not welcome. We are the anti-racist majority.
Over 1,000 anti racists marched proudly through Sheffield today to show solidarity with refugees and oppose Neo Nazi UKIP. Nazi Nick Tenconi could only muster 100 assorted racists to march under police protection through our city.
Trade unionists, Palestine activists, trans, Muslim, Christian, Jew, black, white, migrant and others stood together in solidarity with refugees.
Despite disgraceful police restrictions that sought to criminalise anti fascists, prevent our assembly and facilitate the far right, our movement showed that we are the anti racist majority. Thanks to all groups that mobilised for today.
The next step will be our Sheffield and South Yorkshire Unites… Against Racism and Hate on Saturday 22nd November, 11.30am at Devonshire Green. We want to turn Sheffield into a flood of solidarity and resistance.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FROM THE MONITORING GROUP
There have been several notable events this week that might have been expected to boost the far right. The week started with Tommy Robinson – Stephen Yaxley Lennon – escaping conviction on terrorism charges. However, whilst a number of Tommy supporters gathered at the court there was not a significant protest. The week of course ended with Remembrance Sunday. The annual poppy fest promoted from the top of the establishment might have been expected to boost the right.
Despite this there has been little sign of increased numbers on far right protests. Tenconi was magnificently outnumbered in Sheffield, losing two of his security detail to police action and literally carried out of the scene by the remaining goons.
Gloucester SUTR and locals turning out to significantly outnumber a derisory number of far right and fascists set the pattern last Sunday for the week. The far right operation there seems to have fallen apart with SUTR and others able to point out the criminal convictions of its leaders.
The Pink Ladies seem to moving in two directions with rival groups set up – probably to cash in on the merchandising but also pulling together to some extent, seeking to support each others protests although numbers remain small.
The DFLA under Phil Hickin only managed a small number of old-time football hooligans outside Whitehall during the week and a tiny number gathered outside City Hall in London Docklands.
Several regular far right protest rumble on – Newcastle, Bournemouth and others but as we argued previously numbers are down. Ideologically the protests have moved on in their demands. No longer focused on asylum seekers to the same extent there is a radicalisation and a move to a harder position with Remigration Now – promoted by fascist groups – becoming more common.
Flags remain a problem in several areas such as Cheshunt and Broxbourne in outer north London and in several cities in the north. However activists and councils are taking them down and stories are emerging of them interfering with Christmas lights.
On the ground we are seeing signs that the police are identifying the hordes of far right “auditors” as part of the right and starting to ignore their claims of being “press”. This seemed to be the case in Sheffield and we should argue this with police at all protests.
None of this should lead to complacency.
Reform continues to win council seats and Labour continue to bend towards the racists, boosting their confidence. Moreover, organisation across the far right seems to be developing. Sarah White previously of Epping Reform – now in Advance UK, is this week in Poland with Tommy Robinson and others at the huge fascist demonstration that piggy backs on the National Day celebrations.
Tommy has this week been asking for more money to boost his full time team – of course it will fuel his luxury consumption but as he is the only one able to bring the far right together we have to take that seriously.
As argued at SUTR conference we are in the fight of our lives. SUTR however has a strategy that is showing results. With persistence, patience and determination we can beat them!
