Live reports from anti-fascist protests around the UK – Saturday 3 August 2024

gays against the nazis in manchester today

Blackpool:

18:45 – According to latest reports, fascists tried to attack a hotel where migrants are living. They then tried to attack the Rebellion punk music festival. Hundreds of punks defended themselves and overpowered the fascists, and the police had to step in.

Bristol:

21:00 – Anti-fascists protect a hotel from attack by far right thugs. Anti-fascists chant: ‘We are many, you are few. We are Bristol, who are you?’

20:12 – Solidarity with anti-fascists in Bristol who in BIG numbers are vigorously opposing a much smaller group of ‘Tommy Robinson’ supporters. The latter attacked police again just now.

Stoke:

17:30 – Stoke disruption seems to have finally settled about 30 mins ago. It culminated in about 400 local lads turning up at the mosque to defend it and then rushing on to the green space in front which appeared to push the fash back.

There was then a stalemate for a while separated by riot police until the fash dwindled to nothing and left. However it seems on their way back through the city centre there has been more individual attacks.

Eyewitness report from earlier today: We held the line for 3 and a half hours in stoke city centre. Fash assembled just on outskirts 5 mins walk away. They had multiple attempts to march into Muslim communities which the police only just stopped. Eventually they marched around the city centre and then on to our counter. We were outnumbered approx 100-250+ but we drowned them out with chants.

A group of Asian lads started swelling our ranks but a community leader was insisting we needed to pull away to stop them getting violent. We held on by pulling back very slightly and we’re protected by about 3 police vans and large police line. Eventually the fash drew away apparently towards a rumour of a white man being stabbed.

As far as I know they still have a group hanging around a local park near mosques. It could escalate. But we took the opportunity after they’d gone to celebrate holding the line and then dispersed. Lots of work to do in stoke to get muslim community leaders in dialogue with us

Liverpool:

22:52: Report from on the ground in Liverpool – Around 800 anti-fascists rallied at St George’s Hall in Liverpool against the mobilisation of the far right. Local religious leaders, MPs and trade unionists spoke and energised our demonstration. Given our vigor and size, we decided to march to the pier, where the far right was gathering.

As our march reached the pier, we saw that our numbers had shrunk and that we were heavily outnumbered by the far right, who numbered well over 1,000. We confronted them while dodging projectiles and being pushed back by the police. Emboldened by their numbers, the far right tried to surround us. Some individual fascists managed to circumvent police lines but no one was seriously injured to my knowledge, despite a few minor skirmishes.

After we managed to leave, the far right began rampaging through the city centre, attacking people in the street, shops and a table of people offering Qurans. Some of the fascists went to attack a small mosque on County Road and have reportedly smashed and looted local shops and set fire to bins.

This is a clarion call to build Stand Up to Racism rapidly and broadly to beat back the far right.

16:00 – Alexi Sayle is a legend in his own lifetime:

BREAKING: a stand off in #Liverpool between hundreds of antifascists from @LiverpoolSutr facing down far right thugs spreading racism and Islamophobia:

This is #Liverpool right now, marching from St George’s Hall to the Pier Head, letting the racists know they’re not wanted in this city. There are more of us than them, there are more good people in the world than bad.

Samira Ali, SUTR national organiser on the mic at the Liverpool rally at St George’s Hall:

Manchester:

The fascists vastly outnumbered in Manchester today, even though the police allowed them to roam around the city centre.

Whose street? Our street!

Although outnumbered, the fascists attacked any ethnic minorities they came across – such as this black man:

Leeds:

17:07: 500 anti-fascists vs 200 far right at its peak in Leeds.

Leeds stand up! Hundreds here outnumbering fascist thugs who want to spread racism and Islamophobia @SUTRLeeds

The far right has been run out of Leeds!

Cardiff:

Great work in Cardiff, just 25 far right thugs opposed by nearly 400 anti fascists @sutr_wales say! We remember the Southport victims of the terrible murders & oppose the far-right.

Portsmouth:

On the scene report: Today was not good. We were outnumbered and unsafe. We had about 50. The police said they had 200 . I would say they had around 300÷. We ended up encircled and being screamed at.

When I got on the megaphone I read out the names of the murdered children and asked everybody to observe a minutes silence. We did, whilst the nasties screamed obscenities and abuse. It’s never good when we have to rely on the police for protection. In this case we couldn’t, and had to withdraw . There were about 10 cops there: ludicrous.

We withdrew safely. This shows the need to build SUTR. However, they were opposed and revealed their true face. They don’t give a shit about children and revealed themselves as vicious fascists. Maximum respect for all who turned out. The labour movement really needs to step-up. But I will repeat They Were Opposed.

Steph Richards report from the Stand Up To Racism Unity Rally – I attended a ‘Stand Up To Racism’ event this morning in my home city of Portsmouth. We were outnumbered ten to one.

We tried to hold a minute’s silence for the three little girls murdered. They shouted us down.

Bournemouth:

Belfast:

Preston:

The far right attempt to start a riot in Preston didn’t get off the ground. Again, they were vastly outnumbered by anti-fascists

Leicester:

17:20: Fascists have turned up at Leicester clock tower, SUTR are holding their ground

16:42: Leicester Stand Up To Racism have taken clock tower meeting place of fascists. At moment no fash have showed

Leicester unity rally assembling.

Hull:

Small counter protest by anti-fascists – the fascists have started attacking the police and passersby they don’t like the look of.

We must stamp out this shocking racist violence

This is why we are fighting back, and why hundreds of thousands more will join our movement, black and white together – to stop racist lynchings on our streets.
