Sunak’s government – like governments across Europe, the US and wider – has continued down the tracks of Johnson’s attempts to pull mainstream politics rightwards. The government is intensifying the levels of racist rhetoric and policies and has created a toxic atmosphere that is directly fuelling the rise of the far right and giving space to fascist groups and figures to gain ground.

When Sunak and the now ousted former home secretary Suella Braverman talked up imaginary threats to the cenotaph on Armistice day, 11 November, they directly enabled fascist Tommy Robinson to galvanise 1 – 2,000 far right and fascist thugs onto the streets around Whitehall.

The far right haven’t been able to turn out numbers like that in Britain since the movement around Robinson was defeated by the anti racist movement in 2019.

Virulent racism targetting refugees and migrants coupled with Islamophobia are being pushed by governments and seized upon by the far right. The far right are pushing the antisemitic and Islamophobic fascist ideology of the ‘Great Replacement Theory’. Braverman, and then Sunak, shockingly echoed this in their discourse.

Stand Up To Racism has spent the past year building the anti racist movement, working alongside unions, students, faith groups, climate campaigners, politicians and cultural figures and more, inside local areas and nationally, and internationally, to mobilise the broadest possible opposition to racism, and the rise of the far right and any attempt to grow by fascists.

From Erskine and Elgin in Scotland, to Llanelli in Wales, Scampton, Chichester, Cannock, Leeds, to Honor Oak in London to Portland in Dorset and many more places – Stand Up To Racism has mobilised week in week out throughout 2023 to ensure that the far right and fascists are opposed and not left to spread hate, fear and division in our communities.

Nationally, Stand Up To Racism has mobilised to oppose the government’s racist offensive, with protests outside the Home Office, building on work alongside Care4Calais, the PCS union, the TUC and a broad coalition of forces around the campaign to #StopRwanda deportations and offshroe detention, oppose the Illegal Migration Act and the Nationality and Borders Act, and had thousands marching on UN Anti Racism Day demonstrations in London, Glasgow and Cardiff.

In 2024, we will see a general election and a febrile atmosphere of scapegoating and racism – amdist a cost of living crisis that is bearing heavily for millions of people. Anti racist campaigning that is broad, united and active on the streets, in workplaces, universities, schools, colleges and communities, is going to be critical. From the Netherlands to Dublin, from France to Italy, we have seen the warnings of what can happen if the far right and fascist forces are not successfully stopped.

We need your support – give generously, what you can – every little helps to ensure that the anti racist movement can continue its work in a year that is going to be absolutely crucial.
