We face a rise in racism across our society. Islamophobia is the sharp end of this. Scapegoating of Muslims by large parts of the media and the political class is constant.
The horrific death of Makram Ali and injuries to others near Finsbury Park Mosque last June together with acid attacks and increased harassment of Muslim women all show a disturbing rise of Islamophobia in Britain.
The government’s Prevent programme has also contributed in some parts of the country to a climate of fear and distrust – allowing several high profile cases to take place in which it appears that the authorities have targeted Muslims.
This is a particular issue in schools and universities, where Prevent, rather like Section 28 in the 1980s, has also led to a stifling of debate. Norwich Stand Up to Racism is therefore organising a forum with speakers and workshops to discuss how we can oppose the growing problem of Islamophobia and deal with the effects of the Prevent programme.
Sunday 1 July, 2:15 – 5:30 pm
Friends Meeting House, Upper Goat Lane, Norwich, NR2 1EW
