Family and campaigners demand justice for Sheku Bayoh as hearings begin

Justice for Sheku Bayoh hearings 1st oct 2024

Back in Edinburgh’s Festival Sq this morning to demand justice and the truth as the final chapter of the public inquiry into Sheku Bayoh’s death in police custody begins.

Here’s a video message from Sheku’s sister Kadi #Justice4ShekuBayoh – the family and campaigners demand the truth and no more deaths in police custody.

Below, @PhilTaylorGlsgw explains today is a significant day. @AamerAnwar will appear to give evidence.

The family have thanked trade unionists and antir-acism campaigners for their support over this nine-year long campaign for justice.

The @ScottishTUC, which helped organise free transport from Glasgow, is represented by deputy general secretary @lindasomervill who argues against complacency in Scotland and for trade unions’ involvement in fighting racism in workplaces and communities.

Upon arrival @AamerAnwar addresses protesters and the press.

Rania Obead from Edinburgh Stand Up to Racism closes the rally before supporters go into the inquiry.

Supporters of the family pack the gallery as the hearing begins wearing #Justice4ShekuBayoh T-shirts We demand the truth, justice, accountability and change. #BlackLivesMatter

Aamer Anwar – Yesterday I was asked by the Public Inquiry into the death in police custody of #ShekuBayoh to give evidence on the personal impact & toll of acting as the lawyer for the Sheku Bayoh family & others – the racism, death threats, abuse & vilification for simply doing my job

At the Public Inquiry I was questioned about the personal toll on me as a lawyer, racism, death threats & the role that the most powerful institutions in this country play in trying to silence families fighting for the truth
