800 anti-fascists in Islington defend refugees, massively outnumber far right

islington stop the far right 2nd august

Congratulations to everyone that joined the demonstration is Islington on Saturday. Our anti-fascist side was 800-strong and brilliant, militant and lively!

The fascists had a maximum of 200 and will have been demoralised after we flooded the streets with anti-fascist chants, banners and unity on our side.

The demonstration was called by Stand Up to Racism and Islington Independents.

Powerful rally speakers expose the far right – ‘they shall not pass!’

A rally was held outside the hotel with speakers including Ed Harlow, National Education Union vice president – “The far right have no interest in defending women or children – let’s remember that in our schools all children, including refugee children, learn together”:

Ruth Hayes from Unite the Union national executive – “the cost of living crisis is not the fault of refugees, its unscrupulous employers!”:

Alex Gordon from the RMT: “We call out politicians who give cover to fascists – the climate for riots last year was laid by the Daily Mail & politicians who gaslight us by saying migrants/refugees are to blame for the housing crisis.”

And Diane Abbott MP – “We say to racists & fascists – they shall not pass! London was built by successive waves of migrants – and we won’t be fooled by politicians who pander to racism and fascism”:

Mohammed Kozbar, chair of Finsbury Park Mosque: “Refugees risk their lives to come here because we interfere in their countries! The far right target Black, Muslim, Jewish & Irish communities – they will come for others when they are finished with us!”

Leah Borromeo, journalist from the local area addresses RefugeesAreWelcome demo in London: “We are a diverse community – and that includes our families – we are united – our differences are to be celebrated!”
