Home Secretary Suella Braverman’s speech ahead of the Tory Party conference in Manchester this week has been widely condemned as akin to Enoch Powell’s ‘Rivers of Blood’ racist line in the sand speech. Fascist Tommy Robinson was quick off the mark to tweet highlighting the significance of her rabid attack on refugees and multiculturalism. The alarming intervention has gone well beyond the dog whistle to the far right and fascist forces, and in a context where these groups and individuals – such as fascists in Patriotic Alternative, Homeland and Alek Yerbury – have been popping up in towns all over Britain spreading their hateful message. Fascists and the far right, and with pockets of racist response to refugees such as in Llenelli or Portland, are being fed oxygen by the scale of racism being normalised by the government.
